Why the early years matter
Many service award programs start at year five. At any given time, half of workers have been with their employer for less time than that. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a median tenure with the current employer of 4.1 years for all wage and salary workers in January 2026 (BLS Employee Tenure, released September 24, 2026). For transportation and material moving occupations, which include truck drivers, the median was 3.5 years (BLS Table 6). A program that waits until year five misses many of the people it is meant to keep. Recognize years one and three, even simply.
Fair pay and adequate parking come first for drivers; service awards are additional support on top of them, not a substitute.
The years of service milestone table
Use this table as a starting point and adjust to your budget. The award grows with the milestone; the presentation matters at every level.
| Milestone | Award idea | Presented by | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | Handwritten note, a small branded gift | Direct manager | Terminal or by mail for OTR drivers |
| 3 years | Lapel pin, newsletter mention | Terminal manager | Safety meeting |
| 5 years | Engraved award, letter from the president | Senior leader | Safety meeting or all-hands |
| 10 years | Custom jacket with name and years | Senior leader | All-hands or annual event |
| 15 years | Engraved award plus a choice from a short curated list | President | Annual event |
| 20 years | Custom ring or major keepsake | President | Annual event, family invited |
| 25 years | Ring or keepsake, wall of service plaque | President | Annual event, family invited |
| 30+ years | A major keepsake, a feature in the newsletter, a letter to the family | President and owner | Annual event, family invited |

12 years of service award ideas
1. Never skip year one
A first anniversary is the cheapest award to give and one of the most noticed. A handwritten note from the manager, naming something the person did in their first year, tells a new hire the company is paying attention.
2. Present in front of peers
An award handed over at a safety meeting, with a two-sentence story, means more than the same award left in a mailbox. For over-the-road drivers who rarely reach the terminal, present it at the next visit and mention it in the newsletter.
3. A pin for every milestone
A pin per milestone, worn on a jacket or cap, builds a visible record of tenure. Drivers and staff see who has been around, and new hires see what staying looks like.
4. A letter from the president with specifics
Name the hire date, a hard season they worked through, a driver they trained, or a long safe record. A specific letter is often the piece people keep longest.
5. An engraved award at year five
A plaque or engraved piece with the fleet's logo, the person's name and five years marks the first big milestone. Keep the design consistent so later awards look like a set.
6. A custom jacket at year ten
A quality jacket embroidered with the logo, name and years is worn in public, which makes it recognition that keeps working. Ask for sizes in advance.
7. A ring at twenty years and beyond
For two decades or more, a custom ring marks a career the way other industries mark championships. Keep the design simple and the same for everyone at that milestone.
8. A note to the family
Long careers in trucking cost families time together. A letter to the household at major milestones, thanking them by name, recognizes the people at home.
9. A wall of service at the terminal
A plaque or board listing everyone with ten or more years, updated each year, shows the whole terminal that the company values people who stay.
10. A short list to choose from at big milestones
At years fifteen and up, let the person choose from three or four pre-selected, fleet-branded options. Choice adds a personal touch while the award stays a lasting, fleet-branded keepsake.
11. A reserved parking spot for the year
A named spot at the terminal for the year of a big milestone is free and visible every day.
12. Keep mileage as its own track
Years and miles measure different things. A driver with ten years may not have a million miles, and a high-mileage driver may be newer. Keep a separate track for career miles and for safe miles, so each record is honored on its own. Our driver milestone awards page explains the two tracks.
Service anniversary ideas that cost nothing
Service anniversary ideas don't all need a budget line. The free ones: the manager's note at year one, a shout-out at the safety meeting, a newsletter mention, a letter from the president and a reserved parking spot. Our post on work anniversary messages has wording for each milestone.
Work anniversary awards: running the program
Work anniversary awards fail most often because nobody owns the calendar. Three steps keep them on time:
- Pull every hire date in January and list the milestones due each month.
- Order early. Custom pieces take time; ask your supplier for current deadlines, and order the year's awards together where you can.
- Check monthly. Of the awards due this month, how many were presented on time? Anything late is a process gap.
Our post on how to run a service award program covers rules and budgeting, and our post on retirement gifts for truck drivers covers the last milestone.
